I don't blame George; TV is easier, and he's getting tens of millions of dollars to do it. Scott Lynch, as far as I know, got divorced. Like, move the hell on. As for Rothfuss, I've read that he has stolen money from charity and felt up underage fans. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, he can die. I agree with Dresden. "The Fifth Season" I wanted to like, but holy crap, it was awful, and the "twist" could be seen coming by anyone with two brain cells to rub together from the second paragraph of book one. I think if you don't read up to "Lightbringer" in "Red Rising," you are missing out. It is as close to perfect as I've personally read. Era 2 was kind of awful, and I think it would have majorly benefited from expanding on certain characters' backgrounds and motives. All the Malazan books have been great, I agree. Pretty much agree with everything, to be honest.

Guys be careful when watching this video, i noticed that a lot of stuff can be spoiled, is better to go blind into this series, thankfully i forgot 99% of what Matt said but some people have better memory and are sensitive towards specific details like creatures looks, the concepts and some plot points that are mentioned in here. When i watched this video i had to skip most of the "what is this about?'' segment before i eat another spoiler. Just skip that segment and probably most of the Pro and Cons segment too

You mentioned that Sci-Fi books in general don't do much character development - but I disagree, in part. Sci-Fi novels tend to lack *individual* human character development, but individual humans by and large are not the main characters - humanity as a whole and technology are.

Feels like McCarthy broke your categories, reminded you that violence is actually evil, not mere entertainment. The sanitized violence of popular culture is designed to deaden your conscience, whereas McCarthy is trying to wake it up. Nothing wrong with waking up, it’s a way to be.

I'm a huge Cradle fan and I agree with lots of points in this review. The "problem" you're talking about at 9:50 was a big issue I had with the story as well!

Its really refreshing to hear your take on Kaladin in this book. He's always been my least favorite POV character, and I lay most of the blame for that on this first book spending too much time with him floundering. But you cant voice that opinion too often because so much of the fandom is like The Kaladin Appreciation Society. Lol. More time with, and development of Shallan would have been great.

Definitely all valid criticisms, but tbh I kinda disagree on the heroic characters/spending more time with villains. I'm honestly so tired of grimdark. Following characters that are heroic was a breath of fresh air for me in adult fantasy and despite their heroism, they still have plenty of flaws that make them feel real and well rounded without the exaggerated pessimism of grimdark. And with the villains, sure we don't get that much time from the main antagonist's POV for example, but the story did present him in a grey enough light that I wasn't sure what he would do in the end, and to me that was enough nuance to make their consequences satisfying.

While I haven't read most of these books, the ones I did read I enjoyed. That said, I could see your points and could understand why it might make things less enjoyable for some. I'm also almost exclusively an audiobook person, and the reader can significantly change the way a book lands.

youre supposed to not get it the first time

I think hell was spelled "Hel" Due to Norse Mythology. There were many Norse references all throughout this book including character names

I read the Age of Madness trilogy to help break up the Wheel of Time ‘slog’… best decision I could’ve made. All three were terrific

Suprised this trilogy gets so much love. It’s decent but it pales in comparison to the first law trilogy imo. Orso is a fantastic character. Gunnar broad and the rest of the crew were just so average. I dunno I love the stand-alone books as well. This series just really fell flat for me. Book 2 is great. Book 1 and especially 3 were just very underwhelming personally

I just finished my first time read of this one, and while I AM engaged and want to continue reading, I definitely noticed that I spent much of the book wanting to shake the main characters and say, PLEASE NOTICE THIS OBVIOUS THING! But I still adored the world and the arcs are satisfying, and I am so stoked to see how things develop in future books!

Great review! I’m pretty new to fantasy and haven’t read any of Joe Abercrombie books. Your review makes me feel I need to move his books higher on my list.

Have read a bunch of the series, and only Silverthorn was the only meh one.

I hadn’t loved this series. I’m in the minority I know. But I’ve found this series uninteresting/ boring.

I read like 5-10 books a year so it's easier for me to remember than if I were to read 100+ a year like you.

How is the leg ?

It’s a game based fantasy (what once was RPG based in the time of Drizzt and Dragonlance) but he made advancement in the game, and it’s better in characters and he obviously loves hero stories. The planning is also a strongsuit of his. Now that’s literally the MCU of fantasy. Not that deep as Malazan in the themes, avoids to make you think (explains everything), so it’s going for enjoyment. But in that? The maximum effect. So… MCU. Still very good epic fantasy, but not superior literature. Fantastic work of construction how it is made. The biggest complaint could be: he doesn’t use the editor as much as he could and these books prob easily could be shorter by 20% without losing any content. As Bookborn said… the “magic system” phrase is really overused and comes from Sanderson……… 😂

I'm halfway through it right now. Honestly at this point I liked Trouble with Peace a bit more but I hear this series ends with a bang
