I also hated The Goblin Emperor, Gideon the Ninth, and The Fifth Season. What made it even worse is that they were so hyped. I began to distrust any group or person that gave these books awards, nominations, or recommendations.

Any Mark Lawrence book needs to be included.

Saying people wouldnt like lotr if it came out today is kind of a moot point because without lotr all of the fantasy you love does not exist. That said I understand where you are coming from even if I do not agree.

I'm surprised that Nevernight didn't make that list. What an awful story. If the endless simile and metaphor riddled prose didn't get me, it was the creepily written 16 year old female main character by a grown man. I didn't get that feeling with Mark Lawrence who wrote the Ancestor Trilogy: Red Sister, Gray Sister, Holy Sister. Those were some kick ass women, and a fantastic fantasy story. I found them because a reviewer of Nevernight (who didn't like it) said if you want to read a good series about female assassins go read "Red Sister", so I did, end up loving it and reading the entire series.

You have to realize, the fifth season was given a Hugo. It didn't win one. At best it is a second tier mediocre fantasy.

Hey Matt, I'm a bit shocked about what I heard in this review, mostly because I agree with like 99% of your other reviews, seems like we like and hate the same things and have an almost identical taste, however in this particular point I am very confused as to how it was possible to not like the pulpy and rawness of Conan and his world. The stories are simplistic, yes, but they reflect the times in which they are set, thousands and thousands of years ago, there was no morality police, no police of any kind, no public opinion, no political correctness, no characters wondering if their actions are good or bad, nothing like that. In those times, it was as natural as it gets : survival of the fittest. The Conan vibe is not the cliché that you mentioned in your review, the good action hero that does good, but it is more like the man that comes from outside civilization and does not let it bind him. He holds to his own beliefs and is free in all the ways that we are not ( in this day and age ). The appeal of Conan comes from this freedom, he is strong, has his own views, doesn't compromise, and understands the "first law" of the world as Joe Abercrombie puts it : Those who truly have the power to do something can just do it because nobody can stop them, and morality or mortal laws are irrelevant to these kinds of characters. Conan understands this about the world and is not spiteful towards it. He doesn't complain, doesn't cry out "Unfair !" or anything like that, he just mans up and pushes himself further to rise up to the challenge ahead. This simplistic view is perhaps not in fashion in today's society, however it is true in the rawest sense of it. Perhaps there is more to be said, but I'm not aiming to convince you of anything, just wanted to say that I think that perhaps you misunderstood or misjudged some key aspects of this character and this world. Hearing your views on this character and world makes me feel like we read different stories and different characters :D Anyway, I wish you all the best and look forward to your next videos !

Mother of Learning is so good

I absolutely LOVED Mistborn Era 2 and Wayne’s humor hits every time with me, but I totally get it. I’ve read books that others have recommended to me based on their humor and I hated them. I completely agree with the Gunslinger and the Fifth Season. When I finished the Fifth Season (yes I finished it) I gave it to Goodwill. I think it has a very specific appeal with people who don’t read fiction or in general very often. I saw this because the prose and story elements were very simple and hid their motives by simply not stating them. I could see this being a way better movie than a book.

Loved these first two books. I'm still looking for something to scratch this itch a year after finishing number 2. I don't understand what people actually do finish if they DNF this. I guess people like me who only have 20 min here, 30 minutes there to read instead of sitting for hours a day prefer this? I dunno. My style for sure though

Think many of us agree on that Rain Wild Chronicles. And I'll add this about The Lost Metal. Humor/comedy is incredibly subjective. It is easily the most difficult subgenre to write. So completely understand all the ppl that dislike era 2.

Robert E. Howard died on June 11, 1936. None of the Conan books/stories by Robert E Howard were written in the 40s or 50s. We will have to disagree on this one. Did you read "The Tower of the Elephant?"

Thank you for making this video. I felt resistance to read most of those books although they get recommended a lot in "the best of fantasy" videos. It seams, we have a similar taste. Subscribed :)

A lot of the younger you tubers have missed out on , David Gemmels Drenai series, also no one seems to mention Terry Brooks Shanarrah series. Both were great .

Tried the faithful and the fallen on Audible, one of the worst narrators I’ve ever listened. Gave up on the series. Bloodsworn has a different narrator so maybe I give that one a try

It’s been years since I read this trilogy but I do remember this being the best book iv ever read. Unfortunately it changed from Vaelins POV to a bunch of peoples POV and then everyone gets a chapter each and you don’t hear from Vaelin for like 50 pages

This book is incredible and criminally underrated. The first battle scene is so vivid and engaging that I thought, wow! This could be a scene from a great action movie. After finishing this book, I became depressed about how Christopher Christopher Ruocchio was going to top this book. And I still could start the fourth book!

I've Empire of Silence and The Lesser Devil so far. Both were great. Starting Howling Dark as soon as I'm done with Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages.

After being away from the Fantasy genre for many years (since the early 1990's), I decided to return to the genre with Gardens of the Moon. I DNF'd Gardens of the Moon after the first 100 pages. It was as if the author decided to skip world building and developing the characters and plunge straight into the action with lots of jumps between past and present, so I didn't care about the characters and was bored. Reading those first 100 pages was like watching a grade B fantasy movie.

The Dark Tower series in general just didn’t work for me. It’s too meandering, and there’s characters who just do stuff for the sake of it. And the final confrontation is so silly and ridiculous that it just felt like a let down. Read all of it. Not for me.

Ok this may be a hot take. I thought the first two books were OK, but each one left me skeptical about whether or not I would want to continue the series over getting started on other series on my TBR. I'm about 1/3 of the way through this book (no i did not watch the spoiler section of the video, will return for that), but so far this one has hooked me way more than the other two. Seems like an unpopular opinion from what I've gathered lol

I’m here to say again - the poppy war was exhausting. The second and third books especially. So many fantastic Asian female authors out there. RF Kuang is def one of them, but yeah those books were ugh. I also liked the first booked. But the main character was so insufferable. I agree with everything you said lol

I really am a fan of Brandon Sanderson, but Mistborn Era 2 it was very disappointing for me. That being said, and unfortunately, I share the same opinion as you 😅

I take solace in the fact that not only is Dresden no longer bottom 5 but that it was Storm Front which is legit one of the worst 3 in the series that made the list lol. Fool Moon would have fit better in my opinion but it’s not like you put Changes or Dead Beat on here lol. Also Matt’s Fantasy Book Reviews if you don’t like Era 2 since it “wasn’t supposed to be written” because it’s not on Brandon’s original “Trilogy of Trilogies” outline what’s your views on the fact that Brandon has said he’s committed himself to doing the possible Cyberpunk Era of Mistborn bringing the number of Mistborn books up to 16 and the Eras up to 5?
